Alessandro Scarlatti (1660-1725) and his son Domenico Scarlatti (1685-1757) are two major figures in Italian Baroque music.
On the one hand, Alessandro Scarlatti is best known for his role in the development of Neapolitan opera and sacred vocal forms. His style is characterised by great expressiveness, melodic refinement and the use of rich polyphony.
On the other hand, Domenico Scarlatti, trained by his father, followed a very different musical path. His music, influenced by his long stay in Spain, is imbued with a lighter, more playful style, with Iberian rhythms.
Domenico Scarlatti's La Stella Mass is part of the Italian Baroque tradition, yet expresses a meditative and luminous sensibility. Although not one of his best-known works, it reflects Scarlatti's ability to balance spiritual depth with musical virtuosity.
This program brings these two composers together, creating a fresco of polychoral splendour, virtuosity and musical brilliance, with solo arias and large choirs.
