Founded fifty years ago and directed by Joël Suhubiette for the last twenty years, the Ensemble Jacques Moderne - composed of a vocal and instrumental ensemble and enriched by musicological research - performs two centuries of ancient European music, from Renaissance polyphony to Baroque vocal music.

Our commitments and values

Published 26/11/2024

The Ensemble Jacques Moderne is a committed and supportive ensemble. We defend early music through strong values and commitments :

  • Excellence

With a constant focus on quality, nurtured by musicological research, the Ensemble Jacques Moderne performs over two centuries of European early music. True to its roots, it divides its artistic activity between performing unknown, forgotten and sometimes unpublished works (as demonstrated by its recordings of Regnard, Mouton, Tabart, Gagliano, Bassano and Keiser) and interpreting the repertoire of the great masters such as Monteverdi, Charpentier, Purcell, Handel, Bach and many more.

  • Facing environmental challenges

In light of the current climate emergency, the performing arts cannot afford to remain inactive. Concerned about the environment, the Ensemble Jacques Moderne is a member of ARVIVA association (Arts Vivants, Arts Durables), which brings together cultural players to question the practices of our industry and improve our environmental impact by evolving our models. With the support of ARVIVA and its initiatives, the Ensemble has implemented new measures to reduce its ecological impact with the introduction of an internal charter.

The Ensemble is committed to :

- Using clean transport (public transport, cycling, walking) for staff and artists whenever possible.

- Managing its waste (sorting, limiting paper, etc.)

- Reducing energy consumption (putting devices on standby or turning off when not in use, paying attention to lighting, etc.).

- Requesting and organizing, if possible, local and environmentally-friendly catering (unpackaged products, seasonal fruit, local produce, etc.).

  • Gender Equality and Fighting against sexist and Sexual Violence

The ensemble is sensitive to the issue of gender equality within its team. It has also implemented a protocol to combat sexist and sexual violence, which aims to take action  against any violence that could happen within the organization, both at the ensemble's offices in Tours and during the Ensemble's tours or any other project related to our activities (such as educational activities, workshops, etc.)

  • DEVELOPMENT

Ensemble Jacques Moderne works to raise awareness among audiences through introductory workshops aimed at developing participants’perspective and listening skills. These workshops offer an opportunity to discover the process behind the creation of a program and to highlight the creative works of the public.
